"Tools for Teaching is a training program between two covers. It describes the skills of classroom management in practical, down-to-earth terms that makes sense to practicing teachers. It walks you through skill performance so clearly that you can practice with a colleague by reading out loud from the book. Tools for Teaching deals with the entire range of management situations that define the life of a teacher in the classroom - kids who disrupt, kids who sit helplessly with their hands raised, kids who say, "I'm not doing this." More importantly, the book focuses on prevention using lessons learned from highly effective teachers. These "natural' teachers do not work themselves to death. They do not become burned out. Tools for Teaching brings the skills of our most gifted colleagues to light so that they can be understood and mastered by all.
One of the most common questions that I am asked after a workshop is, "Where were you twenty years ago?" Another common question is, "Why don't they teach us this stuff in college?" The skills described in Tools for Teaching are literally the tools of the profession - your job description. The language, illustrations and format make "Tools" easily accessible. And, the heavy paper and sewn binding ensure that the book with hold up to years of hard use. " - From the author
Tools for Teaching provides a framework in which teachers are able to effectively manage classroom environments by: 1)accentuating positive behavior in order to eliminate negative behavior; 2) establishing a classroom structure for success; 3) managing student behavior with the body and not the mouth; 4) developing incentive systems where students do the work willingly; and 5) remaining calm under pressure. Dr. Jones introduces the reader to these concepts and others in this practical guide to classroom discipline, instruction, and motivation. This book is perfect for preservice teachers who are in the formative stages of creating their management plans and for experienced educators who want to reduce stress, look like the "naturals," keep students on task, and have a postive classroom environment. - From quoting Bradley W. Sheppard

Dr. Jones was trained as a clinical psychologist and studied the socialization of children while serving on the faculties of both UCLA and the University of Rochester. In addition to training graduate students to do family therapy, Dr. Jones worked extensively in educational settings to help students with severe emotional and behavioral problems. Dr. Jones spent the past three decades working in classrooms to discover how exceptional teachers produce happy and productive classrooms no matter what students they are given. This work resulted in a revolutionary system of classroom management described in Dr. Jones' first two books, Positive Classroom Discipline and Positive Classroom Instruction. Dr. Jones most recent book, Tools for Teaching, offers an updated description of classroom management enriched by two decades of teacher training.

From the publisher
In Tools for Teaching, Dr. Jones describes the skills by which exceptional teachers make the classroom a place of success and enjoyment for both themselves and their students. Tools for Teaching integrates the management of discipline, instruction and motivation into a system that allows you to reduce the stress of teaching by preventing most management headaches. Dr. Jones helps you reduce student disruptions, backtalk, helpless handraising and dawdling while helping you increase responsible behavior, motivation and independent learning. These skills are made accessable by practical, down-to-earth language and many examples and illustrations that provide the next best thing to attending one of Dr. Jones' workshops.

I stumbled upon this book last summer completely by accident, but I am glad that I did! In three weeks of student teaching I have witnessed both the typical behavior of students described in this book and the failed strategies that most teachers repeatedly use to keep the "lid" on in their classrooms. Having read "Tools for Teaching" I feel confident that I can effectively handle and eventually eliminate the behavior of disruptive students. Although as a student teacher I am not fully able to implement the threefold strategy of limit setting, preferred activity time, and responsibility training I will certainly do so when I have my own classroom. Had I not read this book I would be forced to rely on useless techniques such as "snap and snarl", pheasant posturing, silly talk, and the "sick and tired" look when dealing with classroom management problems. If you are curious to find out what makes the previously mentioned techniques useless you simply need to purchase this book! |

I have been teaching for 15 years, have read countless books on teaching but this book is the best. I plan to give a copy to the new teacher I am mentoring. If you have read, The Frist Days of School, this book compliments it nicely. Whether you are a new or veteran teacher, this book is the one you need to read, especially for today's children. The fact that motivation, instruction, and discipline are all inter-related makes so much sense. I am anxious to start the school year with many of the ideas given in this book. |

Every teacher should own a copy of Tools for Teaching! I've been teaching for 20 years, and I've read hundreds of books for teachers. Very few come close to the power of Tools for Teaching! I have been recommending it to everyone I meet. I teach workshops for teachers, both in my district and across the country, and I take my copy of Tools for Teaching with me to share as a wonderful resource. Dr. Jones has a remarkable way of applying the science of psychology to the art of teaching, and his amazing insight provides the concrete tools that both beginning and veteran teachers need to become more effective instructors. Best of all, it's written with a sense of humor that will have you chuckling throughout the book! |

This book had some great advice for low-achieving boys in middle school. The seating arrangement suggestions work wonders. Also, the prompt-and-walk away method works for those helpless hand-raisers. I was just about at my wit's end, and this saved my first year from going to you-know-where in a hand basket! My seasoned colleagues really have made me feel great with their positive comments on my classroom-management skills. It really can help you feel good about what you do when things are in your control- Lord knows- we teachers have a hard enough time with the things that are out of our control. |
