There's no mystery why Tom Peters endorsed Rajesh Setty's newest book, Beyond Code. This simple step-by-step method provides a clear path to distinguish yourself in the workplace but continues to incorporate your entire lifestyle. His understanding of the impact of first impressions and the power of listening is nothing short of impressive.
Every executive or professional looking to make a change is never short on workload and always running short on time. Beyond Code provides a reading format complimentary to those with an overly busy lifestyle by offering clear, concise short chapters that minimizes use of jargon and useless propaganda that other self-help guides tend to lean towards. Instead, this reading treasure delivers powerful messages directly and allows the reader to use their time doing exercises to improve instead of trying to finish lengthy, wordy chapters. Setty values the reader's time.
The fast-reading pages are ideal for entrepreneurs, professionals looking for something more, business and engineering graduate students and anyone interested in personal and professional development.

Through his work with hundreds of technology professionals, Rajesh Setty has had a bird’s eye view of careers that soared and careers that stalled. In the IT arena, Setty noted that while some people succeeded beyond imagination, most people seemed to get stuck about ten or fifteen years into their careers. After careful observation, interviews and insights, Setty realized that the top performers in the IT services industry definitely had a different set of standard practices for distinguishing themselves. To share their secrets, Setty created Beyond Code.
In Beyond Code, Setty explains that today’s tech pros are facing the crisis of commoditization and that in order to thrive, it is imperative that they learn to stand out. Moreover, Beyond Code functions as a blueprint for professionals who want to go from acceptable to exceptional.
Beyond Code explains how technology professionals can supercharge their careers by winning what Setty calls the Inner Game and Outer Game. Complete with exercises, examples, and insights, Beyond Code provides a recipe for technology professionals to raise above the commodity crowd and become remarkable.
This book is crucial for IT professionals who want to succeed through distinction Rajesh’s insights are clear, instructive, and vital for long term career success in IT.

This book is a quick and interesting read. Rajesh Setty outlines his theories for success with excellent real-world examples. This man has lead an interesting life and it shows in his book. His collection of things you can do to be successful are relevant and interesting.
One of the best things about this book: it is easy to read and follow. The language used is simple and straightforward. The author simply states what needs to be said and doesn't dwell too much on any one subject.
The exercises in the book are also really good. It helps you establish a measure of your current state and improve the value of your "personal brand" by implementing simple, easy to follow steps. Some of the concepts like Key Performance Indicators and Mind Mapping are really interesting. One of the themes of the book is that you can't reach your goals if you don't know where you currently stand.
I highly recommend this book. |

This book is written in a large part for IT Professionals by an IT Professional (Rajesh Setty). This is reflected in the organization of the book (highly structured), writing style and format (compact and to the point, yet filled with inspirational quotes, brief stories, lists, mindmaps, and exercises). The book is short, only 120 pages, which is easy to read for people who are on the run. And yet, it is packed with information that can be referred back to occasionally. Rajesh stresses a few important points that people may already know but often forget: build relationships for the long term, and seek to understand yourself and others. It's all about the people! |

Beyond code is more than a 'easy-to-read' self improvement/self realization book. It is an effective guide for practicing what is preached in the book. It is hard to argue with any of the points in the book. However, if you are convinced of the value of the arguments, the book suggests practical steps that you can take to practice the points.
Another common theme in the book that I found itriguing was that almost all practical steps required you to take help from a friend, mentor, partner in order to put into practice your regimen. This is a very valuable contribution of the book which is missing in most of the other books of this genre.
The appeal of the book is significantly enhanced by the personal touch and sincerity of the author. I am sure a lot of readers from the software,high-tech industry will relate to these anecdotes.
There are some aspects that I would have certainly liked to see enhanced or modified. The first and foremost is a deeper level of discussion about the basis of the book and how the author arrived at the 9 steps. The common philosophical basis of the 9 steps is somewhat missing in the book.
Another area is the quotes at the beginning of each chapter which at least I dont find unique or particularly relevant. It would have been perhaps better to keep with the book theme of personal anecdotes and instead of quotes to include a little longer stories about other people.
Overall this is a very useful and intriguing book from Rajesh Setty and I look forward to reading his other books or blogs. |

Rajesh Setty's Beyond Code is an important career and life management book for IT professionals. Indeed, it has lessons for anyone who provides a specialized service in these "commodity" and "outsourcing" times.
Just one idea, or re-exposure to a single idea that you had never previously acted upon until reading this book, can change your life.
In my case, Setty's advice to create a "Relationship Journal" was my primary actionable takeaway. He encourages you to take a careful inventory of individuals within your contact sphere, as a prelude towards strenghtening your relationship.
As one of Rajesh's 9 steps, that idea burned itself into my consciousness in a way that wouldn't happen if it was in the environment of a large book.
The combination of well-written text, meaningful exercises, and mind mapping visuals creates a very effective and actionable guide for action. |
