Kang Yuhua Associate professor
Professor kang graduated from the Chinese Department of Nankai University in 1961.In the same year, she began to teach Chinese as a foreign language at Beijing language Institute. From then on, she has worked in this field for about 40 years. Professor Kang was the co compiler of several textbooks, such as Communicative Chinese, Chinese 400, and etc.and had other books published overseas.

Professor Lai graduate from the Chinese Department of Capital Normal University in 1975.In the same year, she began to teach Chinese as a foreign language at Beijing Language Institute(Beijing Language and Culture University at present).She was the co-complier of several text books, such as Elementary Chinese Readers, Practical Chinese Reader and Speaking Chinese, ect.

本教材采用结构与功能相结合的方法编写课文，将现代汉语中最基本最常用的部分通过生活中常见的语境展现出来，使学习者能较快地掌握基本会话301句，并在此基础上通过替换与扩展练习，达到能与中国人进行简单交际的目的。
全书共40课，每课包括句子、会话、替换与扩展、生词、语音或语法、练习等部分，涉及交际功能项目近30个，生词800个左右以及汉语基本语法。另有8课复习课。
考虑到成年人学习的特点，对基础阶段的语法部分，用通俗易懂的语言，加上浅显明了的例句作简明扼要的解释，使学习者能用语法规律来指导自己的语言实践，从而起到举一反三的使用。
练习项目多样，练习量也较大；复习课注意进一步训练学生会话与成段表达，对所学的语法进行归纳总结。各课的练习和复习课可根据实际情况全部或部分使用。

Preface
Conversational Chinese 301 is intended to be an intensive course book for foreigners who have just started to learn Chinese.
This book consists of 40 lessons and 8 reviews. The 40 lessons encompass nearly 30 communicative functions such as “Greeting” and “Making an Acquaintance”, about 800 new words and the fundamental of Chinese grammar .Each lesson is divided into six parts: Sentences Conversation, Substitution and Extension, New Words, Grammar, and Exercises.
This book lays emphasis on improving the ability of the learner to use Chinese for communication. It integrates the communicative function with the grammatical structure and presents the most essential and useful part of the language in the linguistic environments one is usually exposed to in daily life, so as to enable the learner to master the 301 basic, through “Substitution and Extension” practice, to acquire the ability to carry on simple conversations with the Chinese. In this way, the book will also help lay solid foundation for further study.
In view of the characteristics of language learning of the adult, we use not only easy-to-understand language, but also simple grammar. All this will help him use the grammatical rules to guide his own language practice and draw inferences about other cases from one instance.
The exercises are varied and plentiful. The reviews give due attention to improving the conversational and narrative skills of the learner, as well as systematically summarizing the grammar points covered. The exercises in each lesson and the reviews may be used in totality or in part, according to actual circumstances.
