Finally."The Grim Grotto" has finally surfaced. It was well worth the wait though, picking up where we last left the 3 Baudelaire orphans, rushing down the waters of Stricken Stream in the Hinterlands,on a broken toboggan.I'm a twelve year old from Idaho, who reads at a 11th grade level,so the complicated words here,I understood immediately, without having to read the definition of the complicated word afterwords. This chapter in the saga of the three Baudelaire orphans:Violet (Vi-oh-let) Klaus (K-OW-ss) not (K-laws,as in Santa Clause, many kids in town say it like that, incorrectly) and Sunny Baudelaire (B-OH-Duh-Lare) Violet (who loves to invent) Klaus (who loves to read) and Sunny (who likes to...um...bite.) encounter the loss of their recently found friend Quigely Quagmire (who was thought to have been killed in the Quagmire Mansion Fire)who was also seperated from his brother and sister,Duncan and Isadora Quagmire, who, also like the Baudelaires, have known and seen the treachery and evilness which is Count Olaf.
The orphans encounter a submarine on their journey down the vast tributaries of Stricken Stream,to find, when they enter the sub,Captain Widdershins,an old ship\sub captain who uses the word "Aye!" quite often, and Fiona,a teen about Violet & Klaus's age,who is very smart on the topic of mushrooms and other assorted fungi. The orphan's journey becomes struck with peril in a doble-whammy of unfortunate events, when shortly after Sunny, becomes infected with the deadly fugas,Medisoid Mycellium, and the poor baby has only an hour to live,(but this isn't the BIG event.I'm not a spoiler,so,this is only an EXAMPLE)just as things get bad with poor Sunny, the situation worsens beyond imagination,no,the submarine did not spring a leak,no,the sub didn't collapse,no! Count Olaf's octopus shaped submarine finds the Queequeg, and grabs hold of the Queequeg with its, long, metal tentacles.(this isn't the turning point, either)
Then enters Count Olaf, laughing out some strange, ryhming words, such as :Tee Hee Torture!! Ha Ha Hepplewhite!,and Ha Ha Handiwork!!! Yes,to some, this outburst from Olaf may come across as an untimely episode of Tourettes. But no,it's just Count Olaf being evil as usual. This saga of the Baudelaires twists and turns, and WILL keep you in suspense, right till the end, this Series of Unfortunate Events book will make you laugh, cry, wonder, and think. Definately a book for those who enjoyed "The Miserable Mill","The Ersatz Elevator" and "The Slippery Slope",believe me,this book won''t let you down.

Lemony Snicket is the author of all 170 chapters in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Despite everything, he is still at large.

Dear Reader,
Unless you are a slug, a sea anemone, or mildew, you probably prefer not to be damp. You might also prefer not to read this book, in which the Baudelaire siblings encounter an unpleasant amount of dampness as they descend into the depths of despair, underwater.
In fact, the horrors they encounter are too numerous to list, and you wouldn't want me even to mention the worst of it, which includes mushrooms, a desperate search for something lost, a mechanical monster, a distressing message from a lost friend, and tap dancing.
As a dedicated author who has pledged to keep recording the depressing story of the Baudelaires, I must continue to delve deep into the cavernous depths of the orphans' lives. You, on the other hand, may delve into some happier book in order to keep your eyes and your spirits from being dampened.
With all due respect, Lemony Snicket

It's tough when the things that stand between you and your desired sugar bowl are a host of deadly mushrooms and an uncomfortable diving suit. The unlucky Baudelaire orphans find themselves in deep (once again) in this eleventh book in Lemony Snicket's odd-and-full-of-woe-but-quite-funny Series of Unfortunate Events. In The Grim Grotto, the siblings find themselves headed down Stricken Stream on a broken toboggan when they are spotted by the submarine Queequeg, carrying Captain Widdershins, his somewhat volatile stepdaughter Fiona, and optimistic Phil from Lucky Smells Lumbermill. The adventures that follow as the crew tries to get to the aforementioned sugar bowl before Count Olaf are so horrible that the narrator inserts factual information about the water cycle so that readers will get bored and stop reading the book. It doesn't work. As per usual, readers will want to soak up every awf! ul detail and follow the Baudelaires all the way back to the place we first met them--Briny Beach. 4-7–This episode of Lemony Snicket's continuing saga of the Baudelaire orphans (HarperCollins, 2004), finds them on a sled in the Stricken Stream. They are spotted by blustery Captain Widdershins of the submarine Queequegand taken aboard. Violet, Claus, and Sunny, dressed in diving suits with Herman Melville's picture on the front, meet the captain's bookish step-daughter, Fiona and the overly-optimistic cook, Phil (from the Lucky Smells Lumberyard). The crew sets out to find a lucky sugar bowl. They arrive at the fearsome Gorgonian Grotto, Sunny is attacked by a poisonous mushroom, leaving her gasping for breath. And, to make matters worse, the crew runs into the clutches of the villainous Count Olaf, the slick and chic Esme Squalor, and the bratty Carmelita Spats. Will the Baudelaires find an antidote to save Sunny? Will they escape from Count Olaf, Esme Squalor, and Carmelita Spats' horrid singing? Will they find the sugar bowl? Narrator Tim Curry takes on the persona of each character, bringing them to life with his unique narration. The Grim Grotto is a necessary addition to all library collections so Lemony Snicket fans can hear more about the continuing tribulations of the Baudelaires.-Larry Cooperman, Jacksonville Public Library, FL

If you're reading this review, you are most likely familiar with Lemony Snicket's 10 previous audiobooks chronicling the many misfortunes of the Baudelaire orphans. To be sure, listeners should start from the beginning and savor the whole series. In this eleventh adventure, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire meet up with the crew of the submarine QUEEQUEG in their continued quest to elude Count Olaf, find a missing sugar bowl, and avoid deadly mushrooms. Snicket does not talk down to his intended audience, and the story is filled with clever wordplay and authorial asides. However, there is also a repetitiveness that the audio format may exacerbate, a word which here means that adults may tire of hearing Captain Widdershins say "aye" and "He (or she) who hesitates is lost" over and over and OVER again, even when Tim Curry delivers it in a delightful, completely unselfconscious brogue. And Curry is a delight--both sympathetic to the orphans' plights and worryingly gleeful as the villainous Count Olaf. Lovely CD packaging features atmospheric illustrations by Brett Helquist, and an enhanced CD includes an interactive game of hangman. Gr. 4-6. With the movie poised for release and a wealth of promotional materials (including editions of the books with disappointing photos on the covers) already available, it wouldn't do to ignore the latest book in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Snicket reconnects with the Baudelaire orphans precisely where he left them, tobogganing down the Stricken Stream, and then sends them down under the waves in a submarine escapade, during which, of course, they encounter the evil Orlof and his cronies. Snicket, who hasn't lost his touch for peculiar, imaginative setups, injects plenty of wry asides and witty vocabulary enrichment. His villains remain deliciously villainous, and the long-suffering Baudelaires still accept struggle without complaint. This time, though, Snicket adds a few characters who don't quite fit the molds, and this is the first book to hint that the unfortunate events that have dogged the kids through 10 previous adventures may be coming to an end. Book the Twelfth will surely provide more clues. Stephanie Zvirin Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
