This companion to The Care & Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls (1998) aims at helping girls handle the amazing assortment of feelings that begin to emerge as they approach their teens. The first of the six chapters defines emotions and offers some hints to help girls gauge their emotional strength. The second touches on how the brain and hormones are affected by emotions, as in the "fight or flight" response. Other chapters aid girls in becoming more aware of their inner voices and help them develop strategies for dealing with specific feelings, such as sadness, jealousy, and anger. The final chapter encourages girls to be positive about themselves and feel confident about their ability to deal with negative emotions when they do occur. The message is dispensed in a variety of ways; in addition to straight narrative, there are sidebars, colorful boxed insets, and dialogue bubbles, which often appear with cartoon-style illustrations. The design is appealing, and the content is a solid balance of information and advice.

Whenever Norm Bendell's humorous illustrations appear, people pay attention. His style has been featured in some of today's most successful print and television campaigns. Humorous illustration is a great way to cut through the clutter of our lives, and Norm is adept at communicating complex concepts in a warm, friendly style. That's why his work consistently scores higher when tested.
Norm has collaborated often and successfully with Buzzco. Their first television commercial together was for Budget Gourmet followed by work for ClearBlue Easy, ABC Fun Facts, SouthWestern Bell, and First Morris Banks. The long running Ciba/Program campaign was very successful, winning both advertising and craft awards. Their latest collaboration was for American Girl magazine for their launch of AGTV, a magazine format show for girls aged 8-14. Norm designed the cast of six girls and a dog who will host all future episodes and are now appearing in books and other print.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's perfect for those pre-pubescent 8-11 kids. My daughter, age 9, and I worked through this book together and she learned a lot and is really putting her new knowledge to good use. With rates of depression, suicide, eating disorders, etc., growing so frighteningly among teenagers and young women, it's incumbent on us as parents to give our kids a good grounding before they hit the really hard years of the early teens. This book is an excellent tool to help us do just that. |

This book is a wonderful guide for the social problems faced by young girls and boys!! How fantastic to find a book that not only makes the reader aware that the situations they face are not unique to them, but offers positive actions. It would be great if the book could be rewritten as a boy's edition. |

This book is fantastic. It addresses most of the social problems girls have at this age and outlines positive action that they can take to overcome it. The illustrations and questions make it very approachable, they aren't intimidating and don't give off a condescending feel that books such as the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens gives off. (Although 7 Habits is a good book if you can convince the teen to read it). I wouldn't give it to a girl above 13, but I'd leave it on the coffee table or on my reading table. Even though it'd be a bit young for her, she could get some good information that isn't taught or mentioned in school. |

This book has everything you need to be able to deal with your emotions. It has techniques for you to use when you have a certain feeling that you really can't control. The advice this book gives you is very helpful, and there's even a part in the book of how to deal with your feelings when your parents are getting divorced. If you're embarrassed, scared, happy, sad, mad, or whatever, this book tells you how to handle good feelings, and bad. It'll really take you through the process, and you have to pick the choices you think are right. If you're confused about your feelings in this period of your life, you should read this book. |
