In a nutshell: Hop on Pop has everything needed to get a child interested in reading.
1] - It is colorful, simple and attractive in its presentation of shapes, words and sounds.
2]- Hop On Pop makes a kind of perfect sense for the very early reader who has a child's interests rather than an adults, which is as it should be.
3] - For early readers the words beg to be sounded-out and connected to the interesting drawings. This encourages a type of thinking that brings reading comprehension to the child, without the child or parent/educator forcing it.
Hop on Pop offers an extreme organized simplicity that allows a young reader to enter a compelling and curious world. A child can gather the meaning of the book as he/she proceeds at their own pace, spending time checking-out and sounding-out the words, images and rhymes because they are fun. In the end, the early reader may reach a kind of full understanding of the book which might make the next book easier and faster to be understood.

Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. After attending Dartmouth College and Oxford University, he began a career in advertising. His advertising cartoons, featuring Quick, Henry, the Flit! Appeared in several leading American magazines. Dr. Seuss's first children's book, And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, hit the market in 1937, and the world of children's literature was changed forever! In 1957, Seuss's The Cat in the Hat became the prototype for one of Random House's best - selling series, Beginner Books. This popular series combined engaging stories with outrageous illustrations and playful sounds to teach basic reading skills. Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of children, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the consciousness of four generations of youngsters and parents. In the process, he helped kids learn to read.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and three Academy Awards, Seuss was the author and illustrator of 44 children's books, some of which have been made into audiocassettes, animated television specials, and videos for children of all ages. Even after his death in 1991, Dr. Seuss continues to be the best-selling author of children's books in the world.

This children's book is written by Dr. Seuss. It was written for children between the ages of 2 and 6. Children between these ages will definitely find this book enjoyable. Hop on Pop has good rhyming words and great humor. The illustrations in this book are the best. It is even better than Judy Bloom.
Some of good lines are: "Jim him, Jim is after him" (p.17) "Mouse, house, mouse on house. House, mouse, house on mouse" (p. 6-7) "Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother, that one is my other Brother." (p. 58-59) "Mr. Brown, Mrs. Brown, Mr. Brown is upside down." (p. 42-43) "Night, fight, we fight all night." (p.15) "Day, play, we play all day." (p. 14)

As other reviewers point out, this is an abridged version. Nothing in here about Mr Brown going out of town & coming back with Mr Black; nothing about playing all day and fighting all night. But this is a board book designed for little babies, and it's perfect for them. I will certainly buy the unabridged version as soon as my boy is able to read; two copies of this classic is not too many.
About this edition: The production of this book is dazzling. The colors are bright and beautiful and clean, the lines are jet black and crisp, and the paper is glossy and attractive. Each page could be torn out and framed as modern art. The huge type is a graphic unto itself, and I've noticed my 7-month-old staring at the words and letters, something he never does with smaller type. Another thing I love is that this book uses the classic Century Schoolbook font, with its clear and graceful letterforms. (Overly funky fonts don't help babies learn to recognize letters.)
My son is overjoyed every time we read this. When he spots it across the room, he'll stare at it, then look at me pleadingly. He's now learned the name of the book and smiles at the mere words Hop on Pop. Dr. Seuss has taught millions to love words and reading (including me)... add my son to that list now! |

Hop on Pop and Green Eggs and Ham were the apex of Theodore Giesel's (Dr. Seuss's) creative genius. Hop on Pop is a rhythmic romp through the joys of reading, rhyme, and sight for babies, infants, toddlers, and parents alike. The work is both ageless and timeless. I read this book to my 4-month old and it never fails to get him squealing and wide-eyed in delight. Maybe he doesn't understand the subtlety and weirdness of three fish in a tree or a bunch of people in bed together but it was the sixties...besides their names rhyme, so there is fun to still be had in the PC 00's.
There are so many things to enjoy about this book that it's hard to find a place to begin. The weird hybrid creatures, the creative rhymes and wordplay...my favorites are the thing that can sing a long song. I break out in overblown Pavarotti-extravagance singing and the boy is sure to either laugh or look at me strangely...is this Dad or is this an alien? But the biggest joy of the book comes at the end when Seuss strings together endless rhymes with endless rhythm in the string of run-on words, "hethreemewepatpuppophethreetreebeetophopstop." It will be indelibly stamped on your brain and give your child the joy of reading as well as reminding you how truly fun words and pictures can be. Thanks for all times go out to the good Doctor.

I read this book when I was quite small, since it was new when I was little and I loved it then. So, I bought it for my little one and he loves it too. I remember just looking at the pictures - when they all fall off the wall is my favorite. All the balls in the picture can be quite enamoring. My little one always says when we come to the part of playing on the wall, "Well, that's not too smart, they're going to fall off." Imagine his surprise on the first reading of this book that that is exactly what happens on the next page! We got quite the giggle over that one.
This book makes it very easy for kids to understand reading. Plus for preschoolers, it's very easy to pick up smaller words and then expound upon them with larger ones. It's also easy to use your imagination while reading this book and act out the various silly things on the pages. It provides tons of laughter and they don't even know that they're learning at the same time. A definite library stable for everyone. |

If you want to help your children learn to think of reading as fun rather than a chore, Hop on Pop is the best place to start. I bought my son this book when he was two and a half and for weeks afterwards it was his favorite bedtime story. Seuss's genius in writing this enchanting book was in combining some hilarious illustrations which the kids love with easy rhyming words which encourage children to read phonetically. When a child sees the words "Ed, Ned, Red and Ted in the..." and he knows what sound "b" makes, the word "Bed" comes almost automatically. The story itself is appealing to all toddlers (what two-year-old doesn't like to hop on Pop?) and the rhymes are almost hypnotic. Read this book aloud enough times and you start chanting to yourself "Pup up, Brown down, pup is down, where is Brown, where is Brown, there is Brown, Mister Brown is out of town." (Your child will either look at you like you are nuts or join in enthusiastically.) Three months after I bought this book for my son, he was reading it out loud to me. Hop on Pop is a great way to get the kids started with a lifelong interest in reading. |
