MSL Pointer Review:
It's a good read-aloud story for kids learning their alphabet, and would fit into any story time excellently. |

The 26 characters in this rhythmic, rhyming baby book are a lowercase alphabet with attitude. "A told b, and b told c, 'I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree'"-which probably seemed like a good idea until the other 23 members of the gang decided to follow suit. Lois Ehlert's chunky block illustrations show the luxuriant green palm standing straight and tall on the first page, but it begins to groan and bend under its alphabetical burden. First the coconuts fall off, then ("Chicka chicka... BOOM! BOOM!") all the letters also end up in a big heap underneath. A very simple board-book version stops there, but this original text goes on to introduce the helping hands of the 26 uppercase "mamas and papas and uncles and aunts."

The book has catchy sounds with a great rhythmic pattern that is just fun for parents and kids! And, when it gets stuck in your mind after hours of reciting it, it is much better than "It's a small world after all!" which drives everyone crazy! Ok, so, what's my story?
Our severely handicapped daughter, Rebecca, suffered through hours of arduous therapies, working and struggling to help herself. She started this at only 2 months old and worked very hard at every single session to this day - now 6 years old.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom was one of the books that we read and read and read and read to her during these never ending ordeals to keep her mind sane with her pain and struggles. She still laughs when we recite the words!
By the way, Rebecca is doing very well, although she remains severely handicapped. Her very hard work and efforts have brought her to a level no one ever thought possible (you see, she was dead for 35 minutes at birth). She struggles to walk, speak and feed herself everyday. ....
And, when you read this book, think about Rebecca and all her friends and say a little prayer for all of them! Thanks! |

I taught preschool for years and now have a 6 month old. I have read Chicka Chicka so many times that I can quote it verbatim from the first "A" to the last "Boom". The thing about this book is how easy it is to make it exciting and fun for the listener. Anyone who teaches knows that reading to kids is almost as much about the acting as it is about the words and the pictures. This book lends itself so easily to sign language, volume changes (BOOM BOOM!), tempo changes, humor, and body movements...if you're not willing to twist yourself "ally-oop" like "O", you may not grasp its greatness. If you are, your listeners will be hooked on Chicka. |

I started reading this to my now 19 month old twin daughters when they were 9 months old. At first they just loved looking at the colorful letters, then it moved on to giggling at the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom verse. Now, they actually flip through the pages and try to read the story themselves. They will actually babble the rhythm, with a word sprinkled here and there.
I have now started to point to the letters as I read them out with their various parts ("And I and J and tag along K, all on their way up the coconut tree) and we will then sing the alphabet song with the letters that are listed on the front and back pages, again pointing to them.
Each time the book is finished, they ask me to read it again. I have read it up to five times in a row, before I myself get tired of it. I suggest you see if you can get the cd with Ray Charles as he reads it. There are also children reading it, and a couple of songs. I purchased it through Scholastic Books. I highly recommend this book! |

My 5 year old daughter loves, loves, loves this book. She was given this book as a gift at a book fair 2 years ago and hasn't put it down since. She loves the rhythm of the book. I read it so much that she has actually memorized it and reads it herself. There is now a Blues Clues toy names Conga Clue that recites verses from this wonderful book. I brought that for my daughter for Christmas and she just loves it! She reads the verses of the book along with Conga Clue. It makes for an enjoyable and educational activity for my daughter and myself. Buy It! |
