I found this to be a good book. It did seem a bit old school/outdated though. It would give one option of talking with your child about the issues with your child in an open; problem solving type of way as an alternative to smacking/hitting your child. I think/hope that todays parents know not to hit but are struggling with the skills to problem solve in ways that work. The ideas mentioned were skills I already use and was glad for the affirmation of my parenting skills. But, I didn't get any new skills to build on. I will admit I am going to re-read it immediately and really try to fine tune the skills. This book is a very good way to really look at how you are disciplining and resolving issues with your child. I do recommend it, but don't go into it thinking it will be a easy read you have to pull out ways to make it work for your family. It really makes you think and work and rethink how you are parenting. It is good enough for me to take notes which does say something!! |

Outstanding. I have read many parenting books and as a classroom teacher myself I have a great deal of experience with children. This book is extremely readable, very down to earth and full of ownderful tips, strategies, and techniques for addressing parenting issues without anger and punishments.
This book has unwound the frustrations I was feeling and helped me to address my children's unacceptable behaviors in ways that move them to be more loving and appropriate with one another.

As a teacher, I found this book wonderfully simple and straightforward advice, on the order of "Why didn't I think of that?" Things we should know, perhaps, but have grown up used to different ways of treating children - ways we would never treat our own friends, or even grown up strangers. Given respect, ordinary respect, children respond in kind. It made me aware of patterns I had that made communication less than ideal with my students. It is also an easy read. I highly recommend it. |

I loved this book. I used the principals to better communicate with my employees, and saw an immediate improvement in their communication back with me. I've also used the techniques with my partner's 17 year-old daughter with excellent results. I had a lot of "duh" moments in reading the book, but like many of us knowing what to do doesn't mean we do it!
