This book is a serious writing tool that should be on the bookshelf of every new college freshman's dorm room. "The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law," is an outstanding road map to clean and concise writing. To this end, students of all fields of study should check out this handy text...used properly it will never collect dust.
It is a simple fact of life that good writers advance in the corporate world. These days it is simply not enough to have a good verbal command of the Queen's English. Good writers use clear and simple rules to communicate and convince. Lawyers, doctors, investment bankers, teachers, public administrators and politicians regularly reach out to others in the written form. For sure, the ability to convey a powerful message cannot be underestimated in today's competitive business world.
The "Stylebook" has it all. It includes an A to Z listing of guides to capitalization, abbreviation, punctuation, spelling, numerals and more importantly usage. It will also help someone with weak or little knowledge of sports...there are plenty of explanations of sporting terms. However, the best feature of this book is that it will help all writers with solid guidelines on how to treat complex terms. You don't have to be a journalism major or work for a newspaper to appreciate this book. - From quoting Bert Ruiz

This book is essentially indispensible for so many of us, and so it's never really a question of how good the latest edition might be. That said, I still think AP is behind on the entire field of technology and the Internet. I always find myself referring to the Wired Style book for usage questions for documents referring to Web sites and strategy. There are also some areas in which AP is not backing down: they insist on sticking with "e-mail," for example, when most of us have gone to "email." They also insist that we keep capitalizing "Web" when it's so common now, that the distinction is arguably not needed.
Overall, the bulk of the book is fine - exactly what you expect from AP. But the very thin Internet section is in need of a major reexamination so that we can all stop flipping between AP and the Wired book. Considering how much of our information today is online, you would think AP would place a higher priority on staying complete with their online usage rules.

This is the best reference guide for any student or professional. As a student at the University of Nevada, Reno Journalism School we were trained to sleep with this book. I found myself referring to this book even in English classes that required MLA style and Psychology classes that required APA style because this book not only teaches a person AP style, but also teaches proper use of a word and abbreviations.
Outside of school I have found that many professionals DO NOT know how to properly write and communicate with the media. This book should be sitting on every professional's bookshelf as a reference tool. No longer will there be a need to ask a co-worker about a particular syntax problem in your sentence, it is all right here!

This is the best reference for consistency in writing for public reading. All those nagging questions about what is correct will be answered in this book for journalists. Did you know that you only capitalize a person's academic title when it precedes their name? |

The Assoicated Press has done an excellent job of compiling and indexing words which are frequently questioned in news writing. The general index contains the correct format for most unusual words. It also has helpful mini-sections on the accepted style for typical elements in news writing, such as a small section on how to format times in articles and when they should be used. The book has a separate section for business and sports writing and includes an informative manual on libel. Simply a must for any professional or academic journalist. |
