OVERVIEW
Colbert's greatest strength as an analyst/pundit and author can also be his greatest weakness; that is, he is utterly self-assured, sometimes to the point of arrogance. Also, he tends to write like he speaks: blunt, sharp, "pithy," and at times, colorless. Nonetheless, he is also a very sharp and deep thinker who has the ability to take complex issues and quickly summarize them...to boil them down to their essence and clearly articulate their relevance.
He boldly, in broad brush strokes, lays out the battle lines, and fearlessly names names; particularly those who have tried to silence or bully him personally. But this book is about a lot more than Stephen Colbert; it's about the increasingly strident debate taking place in America concerning who we are as a people, and where we are going.
I personally dislike the term "progressive" for those who are attacking traditional values. I think "secular" is accurate, but I think that rather than calling their ideas "progressive," Colbert should call them "corrosive." The ACLU standing up for the "North American Man-Boy Love Association" is hardly progress; it's more like perversion. But I digress.
Colbert does a fine job of exposing hypocrisy and in provoking some questions that certainly need to be asked. And, in an odd way, he may help heal some of the partisan political divide as Democrats and Republicans who share many traditional values take consideration of the things they actually have in common.
RECOMMENDATION
This is a very important book that will spark many needed discussions in days, weeks, and months ahead. Colbert is a genius when it comes to seeing and articulating issues of relevance and import, and whether you love him or hate him, this book is a window onto the mindset of millions of Americans.
If more of us could learn to read the thoughts and ideas of "the other guys," it could significantly increase our understanding of one another and perhaps even lead to redemptive dialog. For that reason, I highly recommend this book.

Entertainment and political satire readers. Or all open minded people.

Stephen Colbert is a writer and correspondent on the Peabody Award-winning The Daily Show and a successful screenwriter. He resides on an organic date farm on the Tunisian coast.

From Publisher
Stephen Colbert was The Daily Shows longest-running and most diverse correspondent. In addition to his role as Senior Political Correspondent he was one of the hosts of Even Stephven, a point-counterpoint assault featuring co-correspondent Steve Carell, and the host of This Week in God, in which he reported on all things theological with the assistance of the God Machine. His personality, insight and overall rightness could only lead to The Colbert Report, a half-hour nightly platform for him to give his take on the issues of the day, and, more importantly, to tell you why everyone elses take is just plain wrong.

This book is hilarious. You can sense that Steve wrote this book with the same high level of energy he brings to his show. He does a wonderful job using his sarcastic conservative persona (which probably is the reason why he's so popular) to tackle issues such as dating, religion, race, and many more. His thoughts, opinions, and advice are simplified -gets you there fast by using short cuts. E.g. - Instead of paging through Match.com, try flipping through the family photo album. The book is divided into several different chapters dealing with issues such as Higher Education (Steve's college application essay is included), sex and dating etc...
The title may be misleading, but its still well written with an excellent sense of satire, and sarcastic humor. This book is great for all ages.

I don't need to read the book to know it's brilliant - Stephen Colbert has already told me it is and I believe him because it came from his gut. Lots of things come from his gut but now is not the time to delve into scatological musings. So yes, this book is the greatest book yet written this month, I have bought a copy for myself and will be sure to make photocopies for my friends. You wouldn't mind, would you, Stephen? I think people who can't afford to pay for the truth are still welcome to experience it.
But now that this is over with, when are you going to get back to the real threat at hand, bears? We've been hearing about this book for weeks, wrists for months, but what have I not heard about in all that time? If you read the last sentence, you already know: bears! If you're not talking about them, how do I know they're still out there? One could be in my garbage can right now but I wouldn't be thinking about that, no, because my mind is on wrists. Listen here, I take care of my wrists! They're not what concerns me. I can't take care of bears. Your next book should be about the Gristly Grizzly Gmenance. (the g on gmenace is silent, helps with the visual alliteration.) |

Absolutely hilarious! A goldmine of Colbertisms packed into this book. Comes with many little treasures inside too!! Also I don't think it has been mentioned how beautifully crafted this book actually is! If you remove the paper cover, the hardback has an awesome silhouette of Colbert, the inside covers again have a brilliant bit of artwork as well. Plus if reading isn't really your thing (Colbert wont hold that against you!) theres loads of hilarious pictures in here as well! |

I Am America (And So Can You!) is the audiobook version of irrepressible comedian Stephen Colbert's new, opinionated, cover-to-cover hilarious book. Spoken entirely in character (specifically, the caricature of an over-the-top right-wing pundit that Stephen Colbert plays in his daily "Colbert Report" TV show), I Am America (And So Can You!) features the loud, forceful, and utterly bombastic voice of Colbert himself, though the voices of a number of additional celebrities also appear, including Jon Stewart of "The Daily Show", Amy Sedaris, Paul Dinello, and others. The politicized laughs range from an alleged glimpse into Stephen's childhood and family life (if his children don't listen to him they risk being deported), to his thunderous denouncements of America's pop culture ills (baby carrots are trying to turn him gay), to his views of other demographics (children are to be feared because they're here to replace us, and old people aren't dying fast enough). Highly recommended, and a top-notch gift for any friend or family member in need of a Colbert-inspired smile. 3 CDs. |
