The Book of the Century in 1999 in France |
- MSL Picks -
The book is obviously a staple in children's literature with a unique story as well as the art style. The Little Prince, combining simplicity with a beauty of expression, celebrates the imagination of children, cherishment of peace, the beauty of the mind, the preciousness of childhood, and the human spirit as a whole.
When a pilot makes an emergency landing in the Sahara desert, he is quite surprised at the appearance of mall boy. The magical and smart fellow turns out to be a little prince, who lives on a planet not bigger than a house. He entertains the pilot by asking him hundreds of questions, but slowly the pilot gets to hear the amazing history of the boy himself. He tells the stories about the planet with the three volcanoes and the extremely vain flower. The boy explains about his travels, the many Rulers of the planets that he has visited.
The Little Prince was written by Antoine de Sain-Exupery, a French author, journalist and pilot, one year before he died in 1944. Although it is written as a children's book, it contains many riddles and metaphors that will also appeal to adults. This book been selected as Book of the Century in 1999 in France.
The story contains many layers. It is written at a children's vocabulary and comprehension level. You can read it when you're 10 and get a valuable lesson from it, and then read it again when you're 30 and find something new. It is a book that should probably be read once every couple years-just to find out who you are and whether you're getting too old. Adults need to have a great imagination and not take everything so seriously. Look at things from a different perspective: you might see something new. The little prince has already found - Love with the rose and friendship with the pilot and fox. "One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes". Then can you find what is important in your life? This is a book that grows with you.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the "Winged Poet," was born in Lyon, France, in 1900. He took his first flight at the age of eleven, and became a pilot at twenty-six. He was a pioneer of commercial aviation and flew in the Spanish Civil War and World War II. His writings include The Little Prince, Wind, Sand and Stars, Night Flight, Southern Mail, and Airman's Odyssey. In 1944, while serving with a French air squadron, he disappeared during a flight over the Mediterranean.

Few stories are as widely read and as universally cherished by children and adults alike as The Little Prince. Richard Howard's new translation of the beloved classic-published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's birth-beautifully reflects Saint-Exupéry's unique and gifted style. Howard, an acclaimed poet and one of the preeminent translators of our time, has excelled in bringing the English text as close as possible to the French, in language, style, and most important, spirit. The artwork in this new edition has been restored to match in detail and in color Saint-Exupéry's original artwork. The Little Prince is the tale of a pilot who crash-lands in a desert. He only has enough water for just under a week of time, and is having a bit of trouble fixing his plane. While trying to fix it, he encounters a little boy- a prince even. And so begins their dialogue, which stretches the narrator's imagination in all sorts of surprising, childlike directions. How did the boy get there, thousands of miles from any type of civilization? He begins talking to the little prince and discovers that he actually comes from an entirely different planet. A very small planet at that- one that you could walk around in just a few steps. The little prince had 2 active volcanoes, and one extinct one on that planet, enjoyed watching sunsets every few seconds, removing nasty weeds that were capable of destroying the planet, and talking to, along with protecting, a single rose that grew there. The little prince began to not trust the flower any more, and made his escape. He encountered many interesting people before coming to Earth, and tells of what they did to the pilot. It's a very interesting life the little prince had, and before he goes back home, he has a few things to learn from, and teach the pilot. Accompanied by colorful pictures, the sense of wonder this book has is sure to keep anyone entertained.

It was the best present that I ever got. It’s the only book that I’ve read four times already. It’s no children's book, it's perfect for grown ups who just couldn't seem to find some answers to the questions as to what matters to them most. It’ll tell you that happiness don't just come in big packages but in most simple things. It’s definitely one great book! |

This is the only book that survived the many moves between my early childhood and these, my middle years. I pull it out every year or so simply to reconnect with the profound truths Antoine De Saint-Expery revealed about friendships and love. I came across this edition on Amazon when searching for gifts, and quickly stocked up for Christmas. A great story for children, an even better one for adults. |

At first, The Little Prince was like an ordinary fantasy story for children. With people living on stars and talking flowers, I was surprised that it was chosen as an 8th grade reading novel. As I read this chosen class picture book, I soon understood how it’s very meaningful, thought-provoking metaphors may be what are so special and hard to understand about the book. In my opinion, I think that some of the metaphors mentioned are a little too confusing to interpret. I believe that for younger readers, they will probably be able to read the book as a fantasy novel. For older readers, beginning at around my age, I believe is able to read this in a metaphorical way. It is very meaningful and gives a lot of thoughts for readers. |

Many people stop reading children's books when they grow up. They're wrong. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry turns here to words one of the most beautiful and magical adventures you could ever think of and even ten years passed since I last read The Little Prince, it still makes me laugh and cry like a kid. The book comes with simple and poetic drawings made by the author himself, adding another dimension to his fantasy. Pure, heartwarming magic that you hardly find in today's world. A classic, to be read in its original French version. |
