A boy goes out searching for a smart animal to take to The Amazing Pet Show and bumps into a fly that is intelligent enough to say the child's name, Buzz. Although his parents and the judges feel at first that a fly is only a pest, not a pet, the insect puts on a performance that astounds them all and wins an award. The cartoon illustrations showing characters with exaggerated wide eyes are delightful. It is a Great story that doesn't talk down to children. Good to Read-aloud for children. This book can be great for early reader. The vocabulary is fairly simple, and the number of words per page is not high (ranging from 2 to about 20 words per page). In addition, the concept of chapters is introduced, although the whole book is small. An example of text:"A fly went flying. He was looking for something to eat - something tasty, something slimy. A boy went walking. He was looking for something to catch - something smart, something for The Amazing Pet Show." A very funny book for your kids and the winner of Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor.

Author and artist Tedd Arnold was born in Elmira, NY on January 20, 1949. His family lived on a farm in Pennsylvania for several years before moving to Gainesville, Florida. There, Tedd began taking his first art lessons in an abandoned dentist’s office, which eventually led him to graduate with a B.F.A. from the University of Florida. He is married to Carol Clark, a teacher, and has two children. Carol introduced Tedd to the idea of writing and illustrating children's books while he was working as a commercial illustrator. Tedd's first son, Walter, inspired his breakthrough picture book, No Jumping on the Bed!, and his second son William its sequel, No Water in the Tub! Tedd has published more than 30 books, and in his spare time enjoys tennis, sketching, reading, coin collecting, and computers. He is currently living with his family in Elmira, NY, as a free-lance author and illustrator.
"The writing was always for the pictures. The pictures were the real thing, the reason for being, the fun. Which is why the label of 'author' still feels like brand new dress shoes, while 'artist' feels like well-worn, street-running, tree-climbing, can-kicking, ballpark sneakers. But don't we all just love a new pair of shoes!"
Tedd admits that many of his ideas for books and illustrations stem from things his kids say and do. He takes the idea and then develops it into a larger story. Once the story is written, Tedd begins the process of illustrating.
Tedd's love of children's books began when he himself was a child and his mother read him Dr. Seuss books. Tedd says that Dr. Seuss’ books remain vivid in his mind and were a great influence on his work. In addition, Tedd has a special love for Mother Goose rhymes and has illustrated two Mother Goose collections.
Before Tedd became a writer and illustrator, he had many interesting jobs, including soldier, hamburger maker, popcorn popper at the movie theater, worm counter at a fishing tackle store, delivering newspapers, and advertising.

Boy and fly meet and so begins a beautiful and very funny friendship. Using hyperbole, puns, slapstick, and silly drawings, bestselling author/illustrator Tedd Arnold creates an easy reader that is full of fun. "A pop-eyed, self-confident mite in Arnold's droll cartoon illustrations, Fly Guy's up to any challenge, whether it be eating a hot dog or performing amazing aerial acrobatics; readers drawn by the flashy foil cover will stick around to applaud this unusually capable critter."

Books for beginning readers often lack a compelling narrative thread or lively characterization as a result of their limited length and vocabulary. Hi, Fly Guy! is the exception to the rule. With 4 or few lines per page, this 4-"chapter" book introduces a conflict (Will Buzz be able to enter his new pet in a local contest?) which is resolved by the end of the book. Characters, including the pet fly, develop over the course of the story. And the inclusion of gross elements (i.e., flies like rotten, smelly stuff) and the male protagonist make this is great "boy" book. 2006 Geisel Award Winner. |

It is so difficult to find amusing and interesting easy reader books. I stumbled upon this book (and the sequel, Super Fly Guy) when looking for books for a student I am tutoring. It is probably a primer to 1st grade level text, but it has "chapters" which makes it seem a bit "older" to the student, thus building their confidence level. In addition, it has fabulous illustrations and children think the story is hilarious. I rarely buy hardback easy readers, but this one was worth the extra investment. I can hardly wait until the next book in the series comes out in September 2006! |

Although this book is a "chapter" book, I found that we could read it in one sitting. The words are repetitive and easy to read with only a little help from mom or dad...which is the best way to help a child learn to read. My son is 6 and in kindergarten and we both enjoyed this book very much. |

My first grader had had this 2 days and he has read it out loud to us and his friend half a dozen times. It has given him a big confidence boost in his reading ability. He even wants to take the book into class so HE can read out loud to them, amazing. It is a funny cute story with adorable illustrations; we want more Fly Guy and Buzz stuff!! |
