Clifford is a big red dog, and, by virtue of his size, he does dominate the scene. But in actuality, the stories are about Clifford and his "owner", Emily Elizabeth, who devotedly loves and stands by here rater strange canine come what may. This is a great book to read to little ones who love Clifford. It is a cute story introducing Emily Elizabeth and her big, red dog. The story is simple and the book is just short enough to hold a little ones attention. Children love the idea of the things you could do and the fun you could have with a giant dog, and Norman Birdwell's delightful, Clifford-proof board-book edition will not disappoint.

Growing up in Kokomo, Indiana, Norman Bridwell was always drawing. But not everyone believed his drawings or writing would someday delight millions of children (and parents and teachers) around the world.
He studied first at the John Herron Art Institute inIndianapolis and then moved to New York, where he took classes at another art school, Cooper Union, for two years. He thenwent to work as a commercial artist. It was in 1962 while he was working as a freelance filmstrip and slide illustrator anddrawing mostly cartoons that Bridwell decided to put together a portfolio of colorful drawings and make the rounds ofchildren's book publishers.
Bridwell sums up Clifford's characteristics matter-of-factly: "He's red and he's warm. Clifford does what you'd like to do butcan't. Because Clifford is so big and also because he's a dog, he's able to do the most unbelievable and imaginative things." But not too unbelievable or imaginative. You won't see Clifford traveling in outer space, for example. Bridwell is firm about hisdecision that Clifford won't do anything that a real dog wouldn't do.
Although Clifford books are based on rather ordinary events, such as camping, going to the seashore, or the circus, when the Big Red Dog comes on the scene, things start to happen! "Clifford always tries to do the right thing," Bridwell explains, "but he does make mistakes." Bridwell gets the ideas for Clifford's behavior from other dogs - dogs in movies, dogs in stories, and, of course, dogs he's watched over the years, including his own. After Bridwell decides what will happen in the story, he sketches it out. Next, he writes the text - first just letting the story flow and later revising it. From start to finish, the process usually takes about three months. Check out Clifford's web site to learn more about the big red dog.
Despite his (and Clifford's) success, Bridwell drew some sketches and put together the text for what would become one of his mostpopular books, The Witch Next Door, about a kindly witch and her friendship with her two young neighbors.
There are over 44 million copies of Norman Bridwell's books in print and many of his stories are translated into other languages.

"I'm Emily Elizabeth, and I have a dog. My dog is a big red dog." This is how it all began-in 1963, Norman Bridwell published his very first Clifford book, and kids have loved Clifford ever since. He's an adorable dog whose well-meaning bumblings have great kid-appeal. Clifford is Emily Elizabeth's, and everyone's, favorite big red dog!

When I read Clifford, The Big Red Dog I thought it was an interesting and fun book for children. It was made in 1988 and written by Norman Bridwell. The book is about a young girl named Emily Elizabeth, and her dog Clifford. When Emily got Clifford he was small and tiny, but as they grew up together he got bigger and harder to take care of... as in some ways that he was the biggest dog in the City. When Clifford grows up Emily describes the activities she enjoys doing with her very big red dog like hide and go seek, giving him a bath, taking him to shows... but also gets in the way of everything such as chewing shoes, scaring the zoo animals away and digging up flowers. They also learn as they go along as they go along in life how they take care of each other. I think the book would be a good choice for children to read because it tells and shows how Clifford gets in all this trouble because he is so big and can never hide from any of it, But Emily still cares for him and loves him, and would trade nothing in the world for her Big Red Dog. I think this book will remain popular for a long time still... and all the other Clifford books too that children love and read.

He's a very big red dog, and Emily Elizabeth loves him-though she knows he's not perfect. After all, when gigantic Clifford chases a car, he actually catches it-in his mouth! He needs a doghouse as large as the family home, he digs up big trees for fun and he takes baths in a large swimming pool. He's an enormous dog with an enormous heart. Millions of fans of the original Clifford books are grown-ups now, raising a new generation of admirers. Even if you don't have a family pet, no one can resist the world's biggest, reddest dog. |
