- Awards & Credential -
A frequently recommended review on European history among AP takers. |
- MSL Picks -
This book is a great supplement to regular reading. However, if you're lacking in time, you can read it as a textbook, although that would give one a rather general overview of European History. It's too bad that a text of comparative quality is not availible for American history.
We recommend this short, easy-to-read, and comprehensive review guide to AP takers and those general readers of European history.
Target readers:
AP Exam takers, undergraduate and graduate history students and other readers interested in European history.

From a Reviewer
Modern European History is definetely a must-have supplement for any student currently enrolled a European History course. However, if you are taking the AP course, have maintained a good average and taken notes all year, then this book does very little to prepare you for the AP exam (the book doesn't even mention AP). It is a handy reference, though, that can be used as a quick review of the material.

This is the perfect resource for anyone looking for a thorough, yet concise, review book for a European history class. Although I did not sign up for the AP European History class at my school, my teacher recommended that I sign up to take the test. I did sign up, but due to a lack of self-studying, I felt that I was going to get a 1 or 2 on the exam in May. In April, I bought this book. I read it everyday (and everywhere) until the exam. (I even read the book during other classes!) By the time I took the exam, I felt I was adequately prepared for it. I managed to get a 3. There is no doubt in my mind that if I had used it over a longer period of time and read it without any distractions, I would have gotten a 5. I highly recommend this book to all European history students, AP or otherwise.

Dr. Viault's book is a very valuable reference tool; either "quick reference" or detailed discriptions of events that have occurred throughout Modern Europe. The book is broken down into sections that make reading easy and interesting. This book is ideal for use as a textbook and general reference. The book captivates the reader as Viault expresses his vast knowledge in the subject with a professional touch. I highly reccomend this book for all!

This book really helped me to essentially relearn an entire year's worth of material in the span of about 3 three weeks. It provided some really good structure and substance to my independent review, and I think is largely responsible for the 5 I got on the exam. The book's biggest weak points are its lack of cause-effect relationships (read: the causes and consequences of 1848), and its description of intellectual movements. Otherwise, the book is great and I highly recommend it.

This book is a great book for reviewing everything you will need to know for the AP test. Everything is clearly written, with maps provided when appropriate and timelines preceding each chapter. My advice, however, is not to read this the night before the test. It is somewhat lengthy and is better used if reviewed as a study guide throughout the year. For cramming right before the test, I'd recommend the chapter summaries [in italics] at the beginning and end of each chapter. These are good general overviews to help refresh your memory and clear up any last minute confusion.
