Whether you're new to business or a seasoned professional, everyone can benefit from reading Book Yourself Solid. One key concept Michael Port has emphasized, over the years, is learning in action. And, that would be my suggestion as you go through Book Yourself Solid. Work the book. Read it, think about it, do the written exercises, investigate the suggested resources, and apply the action steps. This book is packed with interesting, useful, take-action information from beginning to end, with each chapter focusing on key points which are crucial to master if you want to book yourself solid.
The book begins with first things first by helping you establish a strong foundation from which to operate. In the first module Michael Port emphasizes the importance of working only with people you want to work with (the Red Velvet Rope Policy), personal branding, and how to talk to others about what you do in an engaging way. In the second part, he discusses connecting with others as he walks you step-by-step through the sales cycle process. Finally, in the third module of the book, he introduces you to a variety of strategies that can be incorporated to build your business in ways that support your strengths and talents.
From networking to referral strategies, from speaking to writing, these are just some of the suggested approaches (each with a chapter of their own) that you can implement now to make a difference to your bottom line results. Take the challenge and take action to Book Yourself Solid! - From quoting Tara Kachaturoff

From the publisher
According to the Small Business Administration, ninety percent of service businesses will fail within the first five years. They fail not because they don't offer great services and products, but because the owners are extremely uncomfortable with traditional marketing and sales. The result is a frustrated, isolated, and overwhelmed business owner who does not know there is an entirely different, highly successful approach to marketing and sales available - and it's laid out in the pages of Book Yourself Solid.
Book Yourself Solid is based on Michael Port's proven system for getting more clients. And it works. In fact, ninety-three percent of business owners who have used the system have experienced a thirty-four percent increase in their total number of clients and a forty-two percent increase in sales in the first year alone.
Original, wildly inspiring, personal, and provocative, Book Yourself Solid is an easy-to-follow road map for starting and growing your service business based on seven core self-promotion strategies. Through verbal and written exercises, you'll not only learn how to develop a strong marketing plan and brand identity, but you'll also learn why self-promotion is absolutely critical to your success - and how to do it with passion and purpose. Even if you hate the idea of marketing and selling yourself, this practical, inspirational guide will lift you up and give you the confidence you need to comfortably and authentically market yourself and your services, tap into an endless supply of quality referrals, and watch your business grow.
If you're a seasoned professional, you'll find the fresh ideas and tactics you need to keep bringing in new business for years to come. If you're a novice service professional looking for a complete business building system, you'll have the keys to unlock long-lasting business prosperity, security, and abundance for yourself and your family. Once you make a name for yourself using the seven core strategies for self-promotion, you'll be able to run a profitable, meaningful, and absolutely booked-solid business overflowing with as many clients as your heart desires.

The idea Michael Port puts forth about integrity is eye opening. He teaches that, if you work for people whom you cannot serve with your full ability, you lack integrity. In other words, if you have clients who sap you of energy because they are not "your" kind of clients, you cannot do as good a job for them. This is enlightening - even if you don't fully agree with it, it makes you think about your clients and work in a different way.
Some of his ideas are available elsewhere, but I haven't seen a gathering of these ideas together into a system as well structured as this. I really believe this book is the best you can get if you're a service professional. I'm beginning to restructure some of my own marketing plans based on the lessons taught in the book.
As a final thought, the idea of attracting clients with a no-cost-of-entry offer that leads to a low-cost-of-entry offer that leads the client deeper into your solutions and offerings is worth the cost of the book times ten thousand. If you are a service professional selling your own services, you have to read this book this summer! |

I was initially stunned when I picked up this book pumping getting more clients than you can handle and read about getting rid of dud customers who sap your energy and drive. Yet it makes perfect sense to shed the duds and focus on those sane, positive and friendly clients who can best help you succeed. Book Yourself Solid is an eye-opener to say the least. I particularly like the book's very friendly tone and page after page of helpful advice. Another excellent book I've just come across that also advises focusing on ideal customers is The StreetSmart Marketer by marketing guru Michael Hepworth. The StreetSmart Marketer offers a perfect blend of narrative and marketing advice, then lists top tips at the end of each chapter. Both Book Yourself Solid and The StreetSmart Marketer share a knack for presenting advice in a very clear and entertaining manner. I really enjoyed both books and learned a lot of useful tips I'm now applying to my own business with great results. I recommend picking up both books. You'll be very glad you did. |

Book Yourself Solid is a primer in building a professional services business. Michael takes you through his client-tested approach to grow your business step-by-step. He doesn't make any get-rich-quick promises. Just the opposite. Through a systematic do-a-little everyday approach you'll see how 90, 180, 360 days from now your business will be booked solid.
Michael's chapter on becoming "known for what you know" is some of the best advice I've received. The chapter reads like your sitting with your business coach.

This is an excellent book for anyone marketing a service or starting any business, I would think. It's kind of like having a friend to help you through the process. You should know that it's geared towards people whose service is something they're absolutely passionate about, as opposed to something they just want to make money from: perhaps a central concept of the book is that you get clients because of the passion, energy and uniqueness you bring to your work. That said, there is also a good deal of practical and helpful tips and techniques that anyone can use. This is a wise and helpful book, packed with information that is well-worth its small price. |
