Molly Lou Melon is a tiny little first grader. In fact, she is the shortest in her class and is barely taller than her pet doggie. Luckily, Molly Lou has a supportive, sage and inspirational grandmother. Grandma tells her, "walk as proudly as you can and the world will look up to you". Her grandma also tells her, "smile big and the world will smile right alongside you".
One day, Molly Lou's family has to move. Molly is in a new school with new children. There is a bully at school that starts to pick on her. Fortunately for her, she has taken all her grandmother's words to heart.
Lovell and Catrow have teamed together to bring 4- 6 year olds a character to really cheer and root on. Molly Lou is spunky and charismatic. Catrow's choice of vivid and bright water colors is a perfect compliment to her vivacious personality. At times the images have a distorted and surrealistic quality. This lends the book to some good laughs. The audience will be happy for Molly Lou when the problems with the bully come to an end. This book is an asset to any collection. It's great for children who are dealing with a move to a new city. It's also appropriate for kids dealing with self esteem issues.

Molly Lou Melon is short and clumsy and has buckteeth and a voice that sounds like a bullfrog being squeezed by a boa constrictor. But armed with the encouraging words of her grandmother, Molly Lou confidently confronts the class bully at her new school.

This is by far one of my favorite children's books. I think all of us have been picked on or criticized at some point in our lives, and it is our reaction to that criticism that measures our pride and determines how we are perceived by others. Molly Lou Melon showed her friends that she was very proud of who she was and could do anything she put her mind to. This story teaches a very valuable lession not only to children but adults as well.

I am always on the lookout for books that have a story that captivates me but is still simple enough for my two year old daughter to follow. This book fits the bill nicely. My daughter will sit still through a reading and you cannot help but embrace the message within this book that we are all special. This is the first book I have found that deals with the issue of self esteem. I think it will be invaluable to my daughter when she starts school. |

I discovered this book in my local library and my two daughters, my husband, and I all loved it so much we got our own copy. It has an engaging and humorous story, wonderful illustrations, and an excellent message. It is appropriate for a wide range of ages - my 3 year old loves it but it is about a girl in first grade so older children will relate to it. The message that what is inside a person is more important than what she looks like is something I want my daughters to believe. Molly Lou Melon is such a likeable and wonderful character that we all fell in love with her. It is truly an excellent book!

Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon is such a wonderful, heartful book. Its message, to believe in yourself, is so important and its delivered in a funny, nonthreatening way that is fun but gets the important messages across. It is so wonderful on so many levels...it teaches about self confidence, how to deal with bullies, how to deal with moving, positive influences of other adults, like grandparents. The art is also so wonderful and playful. You'll just fall in love with Mary Lou Mellon, even if you are a boy!
