This series is an interesting mix of fiction and nonfiction. Each book takes the characters to another place and/or time to get a clue to solve a mystery or challenge. The mysteries come in 4 book units, so this box set gives one full story unit. Our kids didn't really get that involved in the 'mystery' aspect, in part because we were getting them mostly from the library, which never seemed to have all 4 of a given mystery group. What they enjoyed was that it was a good easy chapter book, with many subjects or topics that were interesting to them.
The First, Dinosaurs before Dawn tells the story of how jack and Annie first find the Magic Tree House and learn how the books can transport them to magical lands and worlds. The first takes them to the Cretaceous period. Through clues and reading the book in hand they learn and discover things about dinosaurs. In The Knight at Dawn, jack and Annie are transported back to medieval times. They find a castle and go exploring and find themselves on the run from the castle guards and worry they will never get back to the magic tree house. In Mummies in the Morning Jack has always been fascinated by and pick up a book that has them traveling back to ancient Egypt. Jack and Annie enter a pyramid and get lost inside. Inside they find the ghost of an Egyptian queen who has been trapped inside the pyramid for ages and Jack and Annie try to set her free. Pirates Past Noon Jack and Annie picture a wonderful beach and are transported to the times of Pirates where they are capture by Captain Bones who is seeking the treasure of Captain Kidd.
These books are geared for kids from the 2nd to the 5th grade. They are entertaining, imaginative reads that help teach kids about history while being fun to read as well.

Mary Pope Osborne grew up in the military, and by the time she was fifteen had lived in Oklahoma, Austria, Florida and four different army posts in Virginia and North Carolina.
After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the early 1970's, Mary traveled all over Europe, and spent the first six weeks of her trip living in a cave on the island of Crete. She then joined up with a group of European young people and traveled in rickety vans through sixteen Asian countries, including Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal.
She was an acting teacher, a waitress, a travel agent, a window dresser, and a medical assistant--all before becoming an author! Now she is the author of many highly acclaimed picture books, early chapter books, middle-grade biographies, and young adult novels.
In February 1993, Mary was elected the 27th president of the Author's Guild, the oldest, most established organization for writers in the United States.
Mary and her husband Will split their time between an apartment in Greenwich Village, New York and a cabin in Pennsylvania. They own a terrier named Bailey, who sleeps on the top of Mary's desk every day while she writes!

We started reading this series to our son when he was 6. As we progressed through the books he started reading them to us. Although based on a "formula" the books transport the children to many locations and times, offering them an opportunity to learn some historical facts within an adventure story. The author has obviously done extensive research on the topics, weaving fact and fiction throughout. Significantly better than the Secrets of Droon series. Our son looked forward to reading every night and continuing the stories, begging for the next and the next and the next book. Worth every penny. |

These books had been recommended to me by several people (including teachers) as a great introduction to reading. I sat down one night with my boys (5 and 7) to read the first book. Halfway through the 2nd chapter, I looked up and both boys were hanging off the edge of the bed caught up in the excitement of the story. We are now just starting book #32 after having read every book in the series up to this point and both boys are still loving it. More than that, it is a great series that I enjoy sharing with them. Not only do they enjoy the series, they also love knowing that some of the places and events Jack and Annie visit really happened! I have to read the facts at the end of each book - on their request - so they can learn more. What an awesome way for them to learn! As you might imagine, I highly recommend this series. I'm sure it won't click with every child, but if it does, you will be on a grand adventure with Jack and Annie. |

This was our first journey into chapter books for our 4 year old son. I never imagined he'd stay focused for so long. The plots are everything a 4 year old boy could dream of - Knights, Dinosaurs...etc. I even enjoy the books - I can't believe I never read them as a child. We are both very excited to move on to the next set! |
