In his previous book, QBQ! The Question Behind the Question, John G. Miller shows how to change our thinking by asking questions in a different way.
In Flipping the Switch, Miller provides more examples on how to ask questions to hold ourselves accountable in work and life. Doing this leads to five advantages Miller calls the Advantage Principles: Learning, Ownership, Creativity, Service, Trust. The book takes only an hour to read and quickly pulls someone out of the doldrums and changes them into a ball of energy, hence Flipping the Switch. Asking QBQ helps us avoid becoming defensive and pointing fingers and changes a person's thinking from 'It's her fault' to 'How can I fix this?' This follow-up book divides the examples into the five advantage principles to demonstrate how each principle works. It's not necessary to read QBQ! before reading this one as the concept is easily recaptured, but QBQ! is also a fast and enjoyable read and seeing more examples gives you more ideas on how to ask the question in a different way. Whenever you feel down or frustrated, grab this book and get instantly energized, ready to tackle anything that comes your way. Changing habits usually doesn't happen quickly, but QBQ can. Spend one hour with this book and save hours of needless aggravation and wasted time on handling things the wrong way. (An American reader)
This book scared the hell out me. The pitch is that consumers are increasing in complexity. They want everything from simple commodities to manufactured goods to what the authors call experiences - immersive, richly textured commercial events. And fast-paced business types better follow or they'll be left in the dust.
The patron saint here is Walt Disney: Coffee shops should focus on the coffee experience, the authors suggest, while restaurants need to realize that the music and the ambiance - entertainment, as the authors label it – are as important as the food.
The book is well written and I liked its fanatical conviction. The authors cheerfully acknowledge that even the most sacred experiences can be turned into a fast buck for faster companies. (They point out that many Americans now seek advice not from their priests and religious leaders, but from paid "spiritual coaches.") I'd love to think this is an elaborate spoof on the absurdity of late-state capitalism, but I'm afraid Pine and Gilmore are absolutely serious when they conclude that "The Consumer Is the Product." God help us all.

Asking the right kind of question is only the first step to becoming fully engaged at work and in life.
In his bestselling book QBQ! The Question Behind the Question, John G. Miller revealed how personal accountability helps to create opportunity, overcome obstacles, and achieve goals by eliminating blame, complaining, and procrastination. The result? Stronger organizations, more dynamic teams, and healthier relationships.
Now Miller takes readers to the next level to show how they can use the power of the QBQ! and personal accountability every day.
When a light switch is flipped the flow of energy that is released reaches the light- bulb in an instant, bringing it to life. Similarly, asking the right kind of question - a QBQ - is the first step to empowering what Miller calls the Advantage Principles - five essential practices that will lead to a richer experience in every aspect of life:
- LEARNING: live an engaged and energized life through positive personal growth and change - OWNERSHIP: attain goals by becoming a solution-oriented person who solves problems - CREATIVITY: find new ways to achieve by succeeding "within the box" - SERVICE: build a legacy by helping others succeed - TRUST: develop deep and rewarding relationships
With compelling real-life stories and keen insights, Miller demonstrates how anyone can find success and satisfaction by "flipping the switch."

Chapter One
The QBQ! Advantage Principles
I’ve seen firsthand the difference personal accountability can make. I recently had my first year-end evaluation from my new boss. In our organization - a large financial and insurance firm - the highest rating anyone can achieve on their performance review is an “Exceeds” My boss began the meeting by saying he had not awarded an “Exceeds” to anyone in 15 years! “But your performance has been stellar and I’m giving you an “Exceeds” rating for the year. I wish I had a dozen people just like you!”
In addition, his written comments said, “Consistently stay focused on the problem and how to make things better. Rarely criticizes others’ performance, but instead works hard to improve the communication within the department, understanding of the situation, and personal skills.”
I honestly didn’t know what to say, but that’s when I realized how much QBQ! had helped me. I had read it just as I started my new position, and it struck a chord with me. I took its lessons to heart and began to focus each day on how I could add value to a situation by asking better questions of myself. When I’ve been frustrated, the QBQ has helped me redirect my emotions toward contributing rather than complaining. I gained energy from identifying the things on which I could have an impact and then taking action on them. And now, one year later, my boss is commending me on the very areas in which I have been making an effort. What a tremendous feeling!
This story comes from Bill, a middle manager at a leading insurance firm and a reader of QBQ! The Question Behind the Question. And it illustrates perfectly what happens when someone “flips the switch” Flipping the switch means asking a QBQ (we’ll cover the QBQ method in greater detail in Chapter Two) and, simply put, those who use the QBQ and practice personal accountability have a better chance of succeeding than those who don’t. I’ve come to think of it as the “QBQ Advantage” And though this particular story is about gaining an advantage at work, the QBQ and personal accountability bring similar advantages to every area of our lives.

Safe driving is pure personal accountability and Ownership in action. It’s our responsibility to be aware of our surroundings and circumstances at all times and to carefully operate the vehicle. For example, if I ram someone from behind, I am always responsible. It doesn’t matter why the car ahead of me brakes - the accident is always my fault, because I should have been at a safe enough distance behind to have time to respond to anything that could happen. It’s a “no excuses” moment.
Beyond driving, when someone falls off a step ladder while changing a light bulb or loses a toe to a running lawn mower - it’s the same truth: At work, at home, and behind the wheel, personal safety is always the responsibility of the individual. So the next time you trip over a child’s toy on the living room floor or catch your foot on a kitchen chair, don’t makes excuses by asking IQs “Who can’t the kids pick up their stuff?” and “Why put that stupid chair there?” Practice Ownership instead. Ask QBQs such as “What can I do to own the situation?” and “How can I be more careful?”

The perfect follow-up to QBQ! Whoever reads this book will be able to relate to what John is saying, and see how taking personal accountability can really change ever facet of your life. Please, argue with me that Leadership, Ownership, Creativity, Service and Trust and not the cornerstones of success in life, I dare you. In this book, John straight-forwardly explains how to truly build upon each of these aspects by doing something as simple as asking better questions. In Flipping The Switch, John takes the insights, values and philosophies introduced in The Question Behind The Question and applies them to these five principles which he terms “the Advantage Principles.” Allow me to share a few morsels that have had great impact: “Learning brings forth energy, enthusiasm, and a zest for life that’s lacking in those who…have ceased to learn.” “Blame never solves any problems… without Ownership, nothing gets done, nothing is fixed, and nothing improves.” “Our goals become unreachable only when we stop reaching…Be creative. Keep reaching. You’ll find a way.” “Service strengthens relationships and builds trust… most important may be the feeling of personal satisfaction and pride that come from rendering Service to others.” Also, “Organizations don’t serve people, individuals serve people.” “…spinning the message is a Trust Killer. Telling the truth, even if it stings, is the best approach. Where there is truth, there is trust.” These are just a few of the many gems that you will find in this easy-to-read, inspirational and powerful book. As with John’s QBQ!, he supports his insights with powerful, easy-to-relate-to stories. Buy it. Read it. Review it. Re-Read it. Work to live it. I’ve only just begun living the QBQ! way and it’s a lot of work it’s also truly rewarding. I am truly grateful to John for taking what he has been talking about in his training seminars and putting it on paper for all of us to read. John, thanks, Ken. |

If Miller's QBQ! book was a 5 star, this one should be 6 stars. Deep, powerful, funny, personal, and practical. Miller understands personal accountability like no other and his content is easy to apply, can be used today, and works. He's back with more great stories and these help us know him better as well. Upon reading Flipping the Switch I was able to take Ownership for a situation I was avoiding. The specific ways to build Trust are things that I can do now and they are very effective. And the section on "Leaving a Legacy of Service" really touched me. I'm waiting for Miller's next book now. But meanwhile, I will "Flip the Switch" in my own life and eliminate blame, victim thinking, and procrastination! |

Both of Miller's books are life changing. One is QBQ! and the other is Flipping the Switch. Very practical content that anyone can use. He teaches how to stop the blaming and victim thinking. As I read it, it stopped me in my tracks: Simple but profound. I realized right then, though I thought I was an accountable person, I had been off track by asking the Incorrect Questions that lead me to finger-pointing and waiting for others to get things done. Now at work I am better able to practice personal accountability by simply looking at a situation and asking, "What can I do to help?" as opposed to blaming the other dep't or my boss or my colleagues. I find the QBQ! approach reduces my stress and I manage my time better. Blame is such a time waster. When I then read Miller's newest book (Flipping the Switch) I realized these ideas can be taken even deeper. I can build Trust, Learning, Creativity, Service, and Ownership into my daily walk. I highly recommend both books. Buy them as a set. Both are an hour read and well worth the time and money! |

Flipping the Switch, John Miller's next book after QBQ! is a winner. And it was worth the wait! For over two years I have been practicing the QBQ! Getting rid of whining and blame was a big step for me and for people on my team. Now we are going through the new "FTS" book and there is so much in it! Here Miller shows us how to build Trust, Creativity, Ownership, Service, and Learning into our lives. By avoiding the IQs (Incorrect Questions) and ask QBQs it is amazing how your focus and use of energy change for the better. Miller teaches don't ask "Why don't others understand me" and "When will she/he listen to me?" but DO ask QBQs like "What can I do to better understand?" and "How can I be a more effective communicator?" These are just samples and throughout the book one can feel the better questions changing your attitude and approach to problems, relationships, and life. And just like QBQ! there are stories throughout Flipping the Switch that are fun, relevant, and touching. In this book Miller lets the reader into his life just a bit more with story that support the content about his mom passing away when he was a teen and the adoption of 3 girls under 6 his wife and he engaged in. The book is striking in its playful humor and humble tone. And yet after saying all that it does, it's basically an hour read. But like QBQ! needs to be read over and over again! Five stars all the way! |
