A leading British nutritional author and founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London, Patrick Holford has written many books on the subject of nutrition, but this is the all-encompassing one. You'll get a general overview of just about all of the major topics of nutrition in this book, but even then, Holford still manages to go pretty in-depth on a lot of stuff. With how many books he's written about it, you can tell he really loves researching the field of nutrition. He even founded his own not-for-profit nutrition research center, the Institute for Optimum Nutrition, in 1984. So even though he's not an M.D., you can be pretty sure he knows what he's talking about. He's certainly got no shortage of cites, he provides over 250 of them for the many claims he makes throughout the book.
The book consists of 9 parts, with 49 chapters split between the parts. Here are the 9 parts: Part 1- What is Optimum? Part 2- Defining the Perfect Diet Part 3- The Wonderful World Within Part 4- The Benefits of Optimum Nutrition Part 5- Nutrition for All Ages Part 6- Your Personal Nutrition Program Part 7- A to Z of Nutritional Healing Part 8- Nutrient Fact File A to Z Part 9- Food Fact File
As Holford states in the Introduction, "The purpose of this book is to show you how to achieve vibrant health and resistance to disease through optimum nutrition." He'll do this by a variety of methods, each working to make the key concepts of the book easier to understand; you'll see many graphs, charts, tables, and questionnaires (to help you find out the best foods and nutrients for you) throughout the book. And Holford does a good job explaining things in layman's terms, keeping most of the concepts he presents easy to comprehend.
Target readers:
Anyone who is nutrition conscious and cares for his/her physical and mental health.

From the Publisher:
How we think and feel is directly affected by what we take into our bodies. Eating the right food has been proven to boost IQ, improve mood and emotional stability, sharpen the memory, and keep the mind young. Similarly, the harmful things we take into our bodies, or anti-nutrients- including oxidants, alcohol, sugar, and stimulants-negatively impact mental health. These are the main issues world-renowned author Patrick Holford discusses in "Optimum Nutrition for the Mind."
From boosting one's memory, solving depression, and beating addictions to overcoming eating disorders, preventing age-related memory decline, and balancing out mood swings. "Optimum Nutrition for the Mind" coves a wide range of important topics and should be of interest to anyone who wants to think and feel great.

Having read this book from cover to cover, and now using it as a reference, it provides invaluable information about how to live a dramatically healthier life than you're used to.
This book does not just tell you what to eat, but why you should eat it. Consider what the human race ate before the chemical age, before processed foods and our taste buds were subjected to the sugar full foods of the 20th century.
This book explains why eating fresh (unprocessed) foods, preferably organic; taking vitamin and mineral supplements; eating the correct fats and cutting out unnecessary stimulates such as caffeine can make such a huge difference.
Having changed my eating habits and also, having started taking vitamins and mineral supplements, I can honestly say that the effect has been better than I ever expected.
I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Take the plunge, you may surprise yourself. |

The book covers a lot of aspects with regards to Nutrition. It enables you to become an informed nutritional consumer. I see that as being important: (1) there so many health gimmicks and some very costly (2) being informed, you can avoid certain diseases or improve your quality of live. Patrick Holford, being a medical practitioner, presents the information in a scientific way. |

I was given this book as a christmas present by my Grandad last year and at the time I was to grasp certain aspects of my Nutrition Diploma. However after reading this bible I was able to gain a better understanding of vitamins and minerals and also the importance of a balanced diet. Patrick Holford has really excelled in writting this book and as proved by the by the title it certainly is a BIBLE. |

In the field of nutrition, this actually has become my bible. Of the dozen or so books I have on the subject, this one stands out for its good research, completeness, lack of hype, and overall clarity. Its a pleasure to give it 5 stars. |
