This is the most comprehensive and supportive breastfeeding book you could have. I have referred to it time and again while nursing three children. I was almost always able to find reassurance or a solution when I needed one - for example, when I had a hot, red, swollen spot on my breast and seemed to be developing an infection, and my doctor (who wasn't my doctor for very long after this) couldn't see me for at least a week, I was able to find home remedies and suggestions that helped me overcome this within a day or two, without going to the emergency room.
Now, the only problems I had: When I first read this, before having my first baby, I got kind of freaked out by all of the talk about nursing toddlers and stuff. But once I had my baby...well, I ended up nursing her into toddlerhood, and I didn't feel uncomfortable about it or like I had been pressured into it by what I had read. It just seemed natural! And perhaps part of that was because I had read about it as a natural thing that people do.
Also, this book (and many other nursing books and articles I've read) claims that if you are breastfeeding correctly, you should never have any pain or discomfort while nursing a newborn. Well, sorry - I had pain in the first weeks while nursing all three of my children, and my mother (mother of 6) and aunts said it was the same for them. I believe that the baby was positioned correctly and everything - had LC's and nurses check our latch - but I still experienced pain in those first weeks. We got through it, and it got better. I would hate for anyone else to think that because they had some painful nursing at the beginning it just wasn't going to work out for them.
That said, I highly recommend this book.

I bought and read this book before my son was born. I felt very informed and knowledgable about breastfeeding and very confident from the get go and I swear it was because of this book. Nursing has been very good for us and I love it more than I ever thought I would. I recently bought it for my friend expecting her third but who was planning to nurse for the first time. After reading it, she became a breastfeeding educator with her friends who had problems. She's now nursing a beautiful baby girl and couldn't be happier. She agrees that this book gave her the confidence to do it. |

I really like this book. Initially I thought it would only have information on breastfeeding but covers much more about parenting than just breastfeeding. It contains lots of real case stories which make it quite interesting to read and help drive the message home. I have read it several times and will definitely read again and again. A great reference book for any mum and would make a great gift for an expecting or new mum. |

After giving up on breastdfeeding with my first child, I was determined to learn more with the next. A lacation consultant at the hospital suggested this book, and it was worth reading! While this book would also be great for a first-time mother, I learned more than I expected! |
