Boyton's story has a cadence that captivates even the youngest audience and that flows easily off the reader's tongue. Essentially it is a square-dance. And not only do the animals in the story follow the riveting directives of the square-dance "caller," participating with movement, so can some young toddlers. Even small babies who can't understand the words can still appreciate the animals' sounds and rhythm of this book.
This wonderful book combines Boyton's classic, adorable animal characters with square dance-like commands to make it a participatory activity. Even the youngest of toddlers should be able to follow the simple instructions such as "bow to the horse - bow to the cow." As they get older, they will love repeating the fun sound effects as well, from "cheep cheep cheep!" to "quack quack quack!" Of course, each stanza also rhymes beautifully, further delighting the little ones and making it a joy to read for parents because the words just roll off your tongue and sound musical, even when you're not singing. The pictures are excellent, the words’ rhyme flows smoothly, and there is always a good story/plot. This book describes a dance step-by-step; exactly like a caller for a dance. The words really seem to make the book come alive. They have a beat and almost sound like music when read out-loud. The words rhyme is born when one almost doesn't realize it because they are born onward by the wonderful tide of words.

I believe this book was instrumental in making my daughter a reader. The cadence you achieve when reading it is catchy. My daughter is six years old now and I still have the book going through my head. We just bought it for some friends who are having twins. I'm positive it will be as loved as when we read it. |

If you can read it without a "square dance" rhythm in your voice then more power to you!! This is Ms Boynton's best children's book! Very fun for parent and child. |

This is clearly our 3 month old's favorite book. She lets out a big smile every time we start reading it. It had a great cadence to it. Lots of fun to point to the animals and embellish with animal noises, etc. But she usually wants us to return to the song-like reading of the book that is so much fun. This one is a winner every time. Snuggle Puppy is another good Boyton book too (one of Mom's favorites), however our daughter clearly likes Barnyard Dance the best. Some of the other Boyton books are not nearly as much fun for this age. |

My family and I are huge fans of Boynton books. We bought Snuggle Puppy when our first daughter was born and have been adding to our collection since then. We recently purchased Barnyard Dance and it has become our oldest daughters’ favorite book. She is 2 and just loves it. Our youngest daughter is 10 months and just laughs when she watches my husband and 2 year old dance as I read the book. They love moving around and dancing. Just a great book for family fun! |
