You may not know Ms. Boynton's name, but you've undoubtedly seen her illustration style on greeting cards, baby clothing and toys and in her popular board books (The Going to Bed Book, But Not the Hippopotomus etc). Her books are full of stout, brightly colored animals in sometimes the most ridiculous situations. Birthday Monsters certainly ranks up there in both the favorites and the silliness department.
A grey hippo awakes one morning to a knocking at the door. When the door is opened, the Birthday Monsters burst into the house!! They proceed to decorate the house (messily), give the hippo a cake (which they eat themselves), and give presents (which, of course, they open). They yell everything in bold, capital text, ransack the house and then... They leave! The hippo stands, sad and disappointed looking at the wreckage for just a page or so, before the Monsters burst through the door again. This time they are cleaning up their mess, leaving real presents and a whole cake for him. A wonderful happy ending!

I bought this book for my niece’s first birthday, and she loves it! The pictures are wonderful, and the text is written in Boynton's usual melodic style-my niece certainly seemed to respond to the sound of others reading the words to her. The story describes five birthday monsters arriving and taking over on "your" birthday; although the monsters themselves aren't scary, young children who can comprehend the story might become upset by certain scenes (e.g. the monsters eat all "your" cake!)-but of course, there is a happy ending. An engaging, fun story for young children. |

I bought this book for my daughter's 2nd birthday and she absolutely loves it. She can "read" the book word-for-word as I turn the pages because we've read it so often!! Sandra Boynton is a fantastic author. We have a bunch of her books and they are definitely my daughter's favorites (and mine too). |

I bought this book for my son's first birthday and it is so fun to read! He is just starting to sit still for a story and this one seemed to hold his attention-probably because of the quick pace and excitement that the monsters demand! I tend to read the monster parts really fast and louder than the rest of the book. And I like the illustrations because we can count balloons and different color hats etc as we read the story. |

This is a fun book about birthdays that is great for children; it is equally entertaining for any adult who's given a party for toddlers or less-than-gracious guests! My 2-year-old loves it; it's aimed at a slightly older child than some of the Boynton standards, such as "Barnyard Dance." In addition, it offers parents the opportunity to discuss what happens at birthday parties, good vs. bad monsters/behavior, and - with older children - how to be a good guest. |
