In this interesting book Blue Hat, Green Hat there are four characters: an elephant, a moose, a bear and a turkey. The elephant, moose, and bear all have no problem dressing themselves. They put their hats on their heads, pants on their legs, socks on their feet, etc. The poor turkey however can't seem to get anything right. He stands on his hat, puts his pants on his head, puts his coat on backwards, etc. The one time he does manage to get all dressed properly, he jumps into the pool!
Sandra Boynton's pictures are always adorable, and this book is no exception. The pictures are also very bold and bright. The story is told like the following: "Blue Hat, Green Hat, Read Hat, oops." Under each set of words is a picture of an animal wearing (or standing in) their hat. This wonderful book is special on many levels. First of all, it tickles a toddler's funny bone. Then, it subtly teaches colors. By sticking with few colors and many situations, the task of learning is made manageable for the child. Since the story is short, it also matches a child's attention span. For help with learning the colors, each sequence has the colors in a different order. That makes learning a greater challenge and more interesting. And finally, it shows the child that it's ok to make mistakes, and that learning such a huge task as dressing oneself can be hard even for roosters! A great and funny book for little kids.

A day does not pass where my husband and I do not find ourselves reading this book numerous times to our 14 month old daughter. The reason? She gets to hear us say "oops!" on nearly every page! Toddlers love predictability and will surely get a laugh out of the silly turkey who never seems to be able to wear his clothes correctly like the other animals. This short, cute, simple, and durable book has so much to offer a developing child such as word repetition (essential for emerging readers), patterns, and the chance to predict what will happen next. Parents can encourage language development by reinforcing the names of the animals, colors, articles of clothing and body parts, as well as the concepts of top and bottom. You can add a math boost by counting the animals, too. This, as well as many of Sandra Boynton's other books, is a necessity in an infant/toddler library. It will surely be read and cherished by your little one. |

My daughter, almost two, brings this book to me all the time. She calls it "Oops book" and wants it "again" and "again" and "again." Sometimes she repeats the phrases after me, (She gets a kick out of "blue shoes") sometimes I just read it. Our five-year-old neighbor is over a lot and likes to hear me read it, and likes to read it out loud to the toddler too. We've added a little twist. After the long and low "ooops," I would say something like "You don't wear shoes on your head!" in the same sing-song way. Now, after the ooops, she says a string of nonsense syllables in the same tone of voice. I follow with the correct phrase, and she laughs and laughs. Read this with your own child, and you're likely to make this a special and unique sharing moment, too. |

My 15 months old son is, since last week, asking me to read to him. I've read to him since he was 8 weeks and now is paying off! His very favorites from Sandra Boynton are The Going to Bed Book, and Moo, Baa, Lalala, but today I read this book to him and he started laughing at the 3rd page, then there was no one to stop him, and I had to read the book about 6 times before he got enough of it. Everytime I read it he would just laugh and laugh. I think this book is going to become his favorite now! |

I am so impressed with these series of books from Sandra Boynton! I LOVE this book! Yeah, I know, it is supposed to be more about my kids, but let's not underestimate the importance of a parent truly enjoying what they are reading out loud to their child! This book is awesome! I think the turkey is hilarious in this book, and my children do to. I know my children like this book for themselves, but I think they also like how excited I get when they pick this book for me to read to them. Not only is this book witty, smart, and visually appealing, but it is educational as well. This book teaches colors, articles of clothing, and how not to dress! That can be very important! This book is a must, as well as any book from Sandra Boynton! |
