A remarkable reading on cross0cultural communications. |
- MSL Picks -
This book proved to be a thorough and detailed text of cultural relations worldwide. I found the book to be full of positive knowledge and culturally beneficial. The information and tools contained in this book could inspire many individuals to communicate well with all people of various cultures. The facts related to cultural negligence and violence are certainly disheartening. However, the reality of "cultural clashes" is not pleasant. It is my hope that more people will read books of this nature to inspire a positive change worldwide.
(From quoting Derek H. Broadwater, USA)
Target readers:
People who are routinely involved in multicultural activities and therefore long to know more about other cultures so as to facilitate communication.

From Publisher
Cross-Cultural Communication: Concepts, Cases and Challenges is a collection of essays written by academic leaders in the field. This text consists of three parts. In Part I, cross-cultural communication concepts are introduced. The reader is presented with frameworks that are helpful in classifying cultures and understanding cultural norms. In Part II, cultural case studies are presented. These case studies include the rarely studied Gaífuan culture of Belize and demonstrate how ethnic contributions can be systematically marginalized by majority groups. In Part III, challenges and implications of cross-cultural communication are argued. These final essays are powerful and provocative. They argue, for example, that the conflict between the police and inner city residents is not a crime issue per se but a cross-cultural communication problem; that multiculturalism in Canada has failed key segments of society; that globalization is primarily a cultural rather than an economic issue; and that ethnicity and race are the true cultural treasures of society. Cross-Cultural Communication: Concepts, Cases and Challenges will be adopted by professors as a supplementary textbook and enjoyed by readers who face cross-cultural communication issues in their work or travel.

Conclusions
Succeeding in the global marketplace is an excellent way of expanding the capacity for businesses to grow. Several communication challenges should be expected when conducting business on the international level. Clearly, competent intercultural communication will be necessary in the global situations.
Cultural background plays a major role when communicating with international colleagues and with culturally diverse individuals in the United States. Cultural values influence how the world is viewed, and how communication occurs with others.
It is important that organizations strive to create a multicultural environment that values and preserves diversity. In addition, recognizing the cultural patterns of the world is a positive step in understanding the global marketplace. Employees must be prepared and trained to cope with cultural differences. Ultimately, cultural differences will be bridged through sensitivity, flexibility, and awareness.

This book presents the concepts and importance of cross-cultural communication. It provokes thought, not only with how to relate to others, but how we relate to ourselves, internally. I believe I will be a better person for having read this book. |

It is vital we form mutual understandings between cultures so that stereotypes and prejudice don't start cultural conflicts. Cross-Cultural Communication has helped me in my way of thinking. I am more conscious now of other cultures than I have ever been before. My interaction with others will change gradually as I attempt to work successfully with different people. I will need these skills especially when I leave Tennessee State University and have to work in a multicultural setting or organization. |
